Nelson Mandela Day

Today is a day that all South African’s are able to come together and forget about what is going on in their lives – their hardships, their problems, their issues, and join as one nation to do something good. Today is Mandela Day.

Nelson Mandela, the man who did so much for our country, who showed such strength and and genuine good will. Mandela is the father of our nation and will continue to be for many years to come. He is the most respected man in the country, you will not find a single South African who could ever say a bad thing about Mandela. For this reason we celebrate his birthday every year.

Today Mandela is 94 years old. He has accomplished so many things in his life, things that most people won’t come close to accomplishing. For this reason the Mandela Day movement started. The Mandela Day website describes Mandela Day as:

“Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did for more than 67 years. Start by devoting 67 minutes to community service on Mandela Day, on July 18 each year, and then make every day your Mandela Day by doing some good for others.”

So as South African’s each year we set out to do our good will for 67 minutes to honour Mandela. Each year the celebrations have grown and gathered more and more people. You can do absolutely anything for your bit – donate clothes, spend time with the elderly, play with orphans, read to children, help paint a school, visit people in hospital…..the list goes on!

Although this is a great idea, it seems quite sad that we only do 67 minutes, once a year. We should be doing more, living in a country with so much poverty there is always something that we can do. The aim of Mandela Day is make everyday a Mandela Day…we need to start following the motto “What would Mandela do?”

Happy birthday Madiba! Thank you for all of your inspiration for making South Africa, and the rest of the world a better place. I hope you have a lovely day….and get bothered too much by everyone. You deserve some peace and quiet 🙂
