Peddling Through Soweto

A few weeks ago I went on a bicycle tour through Soweto, I was representing Traveldudes to do a review of the tour as well as Lebo’s Soweto Backpacker’s who run the tour. You can read my review of the tour on Traveldudes – Cycling Through Soweto, Johannesburg.

I really enjoyed the tour, it was such an awesome experience cycling right through the thick of the Soweto community. I’ve lived in Joburg my whole life, visited Soweto a few times, but I’ve never really experienced it more that driving through it. It is a complete different experience on a bicycle. You don’t only get to interact with the locals, but you get to have a real sense of what it must feel like to live there – the smells, the atmosphere, the services, the people, and the diversity.

I talk more about the tour in the blog post I mentioned above, but here are a few photographs of the tour as well as of Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers.

We went into a small shebeen, which is a tiny shack that was used to drink beer under cover in the past.

Good old Joburg Beer...I didn't try this. But somehow don't trust beer that comes in a milk carton.

There were some really cool mosaic art pieces on sale in the street market outside of The Hector Pieterson Memorial. I loved this one of Nelson Mandela.

Awesome African themed mosaic art pieces on sale outside The Hector Pieterson Memorial. A new addition to the usual African goodies on sale at these kinds of markets.
